Course Description: The South Indian Classical Vocal tradition is a highly developed and systematically organized field. In addition this vocal tradition has not been affected by foreign influences. The vocal tradition is always considered to be the most important since it offers the most direct method of expressing oneself. This system has been enriched by great composers who themselves were eminent musicologists.

Qualification : The students should be able to converse in any one of the following languages viz. English, Kannada or Hindi. The minimum age is seven years. Equal emphasis will be given for Practical and Theory. Exams will be conducted at the end of each year and at the end of the 3rd year. Successful students will be awarded a JUNIOR DIPLOMA in the subject on the basis of the following criteria:
Minimum marks for passing is 50 per cent.
Students obtaining between 60 and 69 per cent will be placed in SECOND CLASS. Candidates obtaining 70 per cent and above will be placed in FIRST CLASS. Duration of junior diploma is THREE YEARS and duration of senior diploma is TWO YEARS after obtaining the junior diploma. At the end of the five years the successful students will receive a Diploma Certificate from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore. Theory will comprise of both oral and written exams and it is imperative that candidates qualify successfully in both. (Students below ten years of age exempt from the written theory exam.)

Dress Code: There is a dress code for all students White Chudidar and Kurta with green Odni for Bharathanatyam students. White Chudidar and Kurta with Maroon Odni for Kathak students. White for all others
General Instructions: Students learning instrumental music shall have their own instruments of their respective faculty for practicing at home. Students of Indian classical dance shall buy ghungroo.

Course Description: This is the North Indian Classical Vocal tradition which developed from ancient India and has been significantly influenced by the Islamic tradition during the Mughal rule. Many great composers of both the Hindu and Islamic traditions have contributed to its richness. This is the more widely spread vocal music tradition of India. Of late the devotional, ghazal and other light classical aspects of this music are becoming increasingly popular.
