You don't need a degree to become an air traffic controller. It's predominantly aptitude based which they determine through computer based aptitude testing, it's in-built ability so you either have it or you haven't.

That said, a degree can prove that you can sit yourself down and study which is essential in the early stages of ATC training when you’re doing 9-5 in college and 2-3 hours study per night. Hence it can be valuable when proving you during the selection process. University can also give you added maturity and some top experiences so I'd say go for university first.

Degree wise just do something you enjoy but make sure you stick to proper subjects (i.e. not media studies) but you sound to be planning on doing so anyway.

When you've got through university apply through NATs (National Air Traffic Services) who provide most ATC in the UK at their area control centers (Prestwick and Swanwick) and at 15 airports. They move quickly so there’s no need to get involved really early as with a lot of grad jobs.

Good Luck & Take it easy.
