More About the Institute +
Mahadevi Kanya Pathshala (MKP) was founded on Sept. 15, 1902 by the great visionaries Smt. Mahadevi Bhatnagar and her husband Sri Jyoti Swaroop Bhatnagar with the objective of giving contemporary modern education to the girls, while inculcating in them the wisdom and goodness of our ancient cultural heritage. During the course of 104 years of its existence, the Institution which started with just 6 girls has grown into MKP Intermediate College and MKP Post Graduate College both located in DehraDun with more than 6,000 girls on its rolls.
During the period of its existence the Institution has had the privilege of welcoming distinguished dignitaries such as Queen Mary Victoria in 1906 who had wanted to see an Indian Girls School, Swami Ram Tirth, Lala Lajpat Rai, National leaders - Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Smt. Kamla Nehru, Smt. Vijay Laxmi Pandit, Smt. Sarojini Naidu, Mrs. Indira Gandhi & other distinguished persons and received their blessings.Though obtaining adequate finances on regular basis was a big problem, the Institution continued to make a steady progress with public support and hard work of its teachers.
In 1951 it got recognition for B.A. Classes and in 1963 for M.A. Classes. The intervening years saw diversification in many new areas and in job oriented courses. The Institution was bifurcated into MKP Inter College and MKP (PG) College. The MKP (PG) college has faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce in its curriculum at the undergraduate level and Chemistry, Economics, Hindi, English, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Home Science and Drawing and Painting classes at the post graduate level. Today there are more than 6000 girls getting education in the primary, intermediate and college sections. The MKP College Society is also running two girls hostels for convenience of students, coming from far and near of the country and abroad. The hostels provide accommodation for more than 300 inmates.
