Please note that the TNPCEE exam is a common exam for all medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, and successful candidates get the chance choose their medical in the order of their rank in TNPCEE. Since admissions to SMC is highly competitive, the college gets filled within the top 300 ranking candidates in the TNPCEE. Lower ranks in the AIPMPD (compared to the TNPCEE) do get students admitted to SMC, but is equally or more difficult, since AIPMPD is a national level exam with more applicants than the TNPCEE which is a state level exam. Besides, the AIPMPD exam is more difficult than the TNPCEE exam.
Certain percentage of seats are reserved for various underrepresented communities (scheduled castes/tribes, backward castes, etc) in both the AIPMPD and TNPCEE admission categories. Please contact the respective authorities for more information.
The following websites will give you more information about these examinations and admission procedures.

MBBS (5 years) course
Stanley Medical College - Chennai
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the title of basic (allopathic) medical degree awarded in India. Applying to the MBBS program is the first step to become a physician, and on successful completion of 4.5 years of coursework (with clinical rotations) and one year of internship, one receives the MBBS degree. This degree allows the holder to register as a licensed medical practitioner with various state medical councils in India and practice medicine throughout India. It also allows one to apply for residency programs for specialty training both in India and abroad.
Stanley Medical College is often the short name for Government Stanley Medical College and Government Stanley Hospital, one of the premier medical colleges and teaching hospitals in India. Stanley Medical College is ranked among the top medical colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. Currently, admissions to the MBBS program are limited to citizens of India, since medical education is highly subsidised by the government.
There are two ways of applying to the MBBS program. Applicants resident in Tamil Nadu state apply through the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE), held every year between March to May. Applicants from outside Tamil Nadu (out-of-state candidates) apply through the All India Premedical/Predental (AIPMPD) Test conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Application in April or May every year. In-state candidates are also eligible to join SMC through the AIPMPD exam, in addition to the TNPCEE. SMC admits about 150 to 160 students every year to the MBBS program. 85% of these seats are filled through the TNPCEE exam, and 15% through the AIPMPD exam.
The College is associated with the Government Stanley Hospital which has 1280 beds for in-patient treatment[3]. The hospital has an out-patient attendance of around 5000 patients per day[4]. A unique feature is its 8-story surgical complex equipped to perform up to 40 surgeries simultaneously, and a separate pediatrics block with all specialities under one roof.RSRM hospital is aso attached for obstetrics and Gyneacology care.
The three well known departments of the Stanley Medical Hospitals are Surgical Gastroenterology, Urology and the Institute of Hand Rehabilitation and Plastic Surgery. The Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and the Department of Plastic Surgery (IRRH & DPS) is one of the best centers in Southeast Asia. The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology was the first in India to perform a successful liver transplant, under the leadership of Dr. R.P. Shanmugam, Surgical Gastroenterologist and the first among Hospitals/ Hospital Departments in India to obtain the ISO 9001 certification. The Department of Urology performs up to fifty kidney transplants a year.
Admissions
Admissions to Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and post-graduate (MD, MS, other diplomas and higher specialties) are through state (85% seats) and national (15%) entrance examinations. Reservations of seats and reduced tuition are available to underserved communities. Admissions are open only to Indian citizens, and are highly competitive. Admissions to the MBBS program (about 150 seats per year) are based on a weighted aggregate of the entrance exam and high-school final exam scores. About 1 in 40 applicants are accepted to the MBBS program statewide (about 1500 seats in 15 medical colleges), and only the top-rankers among those accepted to the MBBS program statewide are admitted to Stanley Medical College bringing the effective admission rate to less than 1 in 200. Several seats in post-graduate programs are reserved for physicians in Government service.
