If the From the next academic year, Tuition fee waiver scheme (TFWS) of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will be made mandatory in all the technical colleges. This scheme is for economically backward students including women and also for handicapped students.

This scheme was followed from April 2007 and it allowed a institutions like engineering, hospitality and pharmacy colleges to admit students under tuition fee waiver schemes in addition to the sanctioned number of students. If the number of sanctioned intake of students is 60, then 10 percent of seats can be filled under TFWS by the college.

This scheme was part of many other changes in AICTE norms which are to be followed from academic year 2011-2012. Kapil Sibal, the HRD minister announced these changes recently including the norms for opening new technical institutions.

As per the new norms, XII students who have studied vocational or technical subjects from the state board can secure lateral entry to second-year diploma courses.
