DASA Information

What is DASA

DASA is an acronym for Direct Admission of Students Abroad. It is a scheme wherein the Admissions are made for Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) / Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)/ Foreign Nationals for B.Tech programmes in NITs, IIITs and centrally funded Institutions. Earlier the admissions were also being made to the IITs but it has been stopped. No admissions are made in the IITs through DASA scheme. For the academic year 2012-2012, the admission process under DASA scheme is coordinated by National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka for the Academic Year 2012-12.

The online application process for DASA 2012-12 admission will commence on 1st April, 2012.

Which Institute is Conducting DASA :

The coordination of the admission process under DASA scheme for the session of 2012 has been entrusted to NITK, Surathkal (official website http://nitk.ac.in/) from academic year 2010-11 . Following advance information is provided for DASA 2012-12 admissions. Candidates interested in seeking admission in undergraduate engineering programmes in India are requested to take a note of the given details. Compared to DASA 2010-11, there are several changes in terms of eligibility requirements, fee structure, participating institutions, process etc. This advance information is provided to enable potential candidates to plan and prepare themselves to meet the requirements for DASA admissions. DASA 2012-12 will be officially launched on 1st April 2012.

Eligibility Criteria for 2012-12 admissions:

1. Date of Birth: Candidates who are born on or after 1st Oct 1986 are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the secondary education board/university certificate [Class X or equivalent] or any certificate issued by government authorities only will be considered as valid.

2. Residential Eligibility : Candidates must be Foreign Nationals/Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) studying in any country (including India) / Indian Nationals studying abroad. In case of Indian Nationals studying abroad they must have had at least 3 (three) years of education in Foreign country/countries during the last 6 (six) years and must pass the qualifying examination (inclusive of 11th and 12th standard or equivalent) from abroad only.

3. Academic Eligibility: The academic eligibility consists of two major components namely qualifying examination and SAT Subject Tests as given below:

a. Qualifying Examination : All Candidates must have passed the qualifying examination, i.e. Senior Secondary [10+2] or equivalent from any system of education as recognized by the Association of Indian Universities with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects and any one of the following as optional subjects viz. Chemistry, Bio-technology, Computer Science, Biology. In addition candidates must have secured a minimum of at least 60% aggregate marks or 6.75 CGPA on a 10 point scale or equivalent grades in the qualifying examination.

b. SAT Subject Tests: All candidates must have a minimum total of 1800 SAT Subject Tests (known as SAT II) scores (Maths level II, Physics and Chemistry) for eligibility for admission under this scheme. For more details on SAT Subject Tests please visit http://www.collegeboard.com/

i) Candidates are required to submit SAT Subject Test scores directly to NITK, Surathkal through the College Board. To do so, candidates who are registering for SAT Subject Tests now must mention designated institute code of NITK Surathkal and request College Board to send scores directly to NITK Surathkal. Note that the designated institute code allocated by College Board for NITK Surathkal is 6530.

ii) Candidates who have already taken SAT Subject Tests and would like to use the scores already obtained, are informed to request College Board to send the scores directly to NITK Surathkal at the designated institute code 6530. Candidates may note that they may have to formally request and pay additional charges to College Board for this service.

iii) It should be noted that candidates can take SAT Subject Tests multiple times. Best of individual valid Subject Tests would be considered and the total SAT Subject Tests scores will be the basis for preparing the merit list.

Admission Process:

The students willing to take admission under the DASA scheme should follow the following process for admission:

1. They should fill in the online application form for DASA. The process of application submission will remain online (web based) as was done for DASA 2010. Similarly, the fee payment and document submission will also be an online (web based) process.The Application forms will have the following options:

i) Personal Details : Enter your full name (as per your records), gender, date of birth, nationality according to your records. Password for DASA portal would enable you to login next time to the portal to know your rank, institute course allotted (after last date) etc. Please enter combination of letter of numbers of at least 8 characters as password

ii) SAT score details : Please enter SAT register number allotted to you (by SAT centre). If you already have the score with you, please enter the same, otherwise leave the entry blank. In the latter case, NITK would take the scores from SAT centre.

iii) Payment : There are two modes of payment possible. You could chose any one of them:

a. Purchase a demand draft as specified in the brochure

b. Wire the amount to the details given in the application form and attach the scanned copy of the receipt along with other credentials (as per the details given in the brochure)

c. You could use EPG service (online payment thru credit card – for instructions – read the notice on the DASA home page http://dasanit.org/)

iv) Details of the qualifying examination : Please provide the details of last two examinations as per your records.

v) Marks obtained : Marks for Physics, Chemistry and Maths are must and others optional.

vi) Course Choices : You can enter up to 15 choices. Please select the institute and the application form would load all applicable courses in that selected institute. Only courses which are available would be listed here.

vii) Preview : You could use the “Preview” button to see if the particulars entered by you are correct. Finally, after verifying the form, you can submit the same. Once submitted, you will not be able to modify the form.

viii) User Login : Once you have submitted the tool would generate an ID using which you can login using the password that you have entered in the application form as above. Please save this ID and pass word for you to look at the status and other details about the application form online anytime.

Submission of the SAT II scores: Candidates are required to submit SAT Subject Test scores directly to NITK, Surathkal through the College Board. Based on the SAT scores and the choices filled, the applicants are alloted the institutes and branches.

The process is done through three rounds of councelling.

Also, if any seats in any institute remains vacant after the 3rd councelling, those seats are notified on the website and are filled through spot admission on first-cum-first-serve basis.

  • In addition to tuition fee, other fees like developmental charges, hostel fee, Mess fee etc., may have to be paid at the time of admission, as per the norms of respective institutes where the candidate has been allotted a seat.

Future possibilities for DASA students

Once the students have secured the admission through DASA Scheme in the respective institutes and complete the full term of the course, the DASA students are eligible as the Indian Nationals to decide on their future possibilities. After completion of the course, they have many choices which include

i) Placements: Take the on campus placements or sit for off-campus placements for IT/ non-IT, core jobs.

ii) Higher Studies: They can choose for higher studies in India or Abroad. For higher studies in Reputed colleges of India (M.Tech) they have to clear GATE, they can do MS etc.

iii) They can pursue anything else like business or other choices.

So while filling in the admission form, we need to enter our SAT registration no. and our scores will be submitted automatically?
