The University Institute of Legal Studies was founded as a separate department under the sponsorship of Punjab University in 2004. The department of legal studies is located within the campus of Punjab University, Chandigarh. Department of law studies offers courses such as Bachelor of Law (LLB), Masters of Law (LLM). The university also made available facilities for doing research in the realm of law. It offers PhD. Programme too.
The department of law provides practical training programme to LL.B. students. There is one full paper in the 6th semester which consists of mandatory participation in two moots, attachment with advocates in District Courts for 7 to 10 days and distinctive lectures by renowned Judges, Academicians, and Senior Advocates. These lectures are obligatory for each and every student since it is a part of syllabus. In order to give practical training to students, every year students of the law department are sent to the Supreme Court of India.
Punjab University Law has set up an Aid Clinic-cum-Arbitration Centre and a Placement Cell too. There is an exchange programme. This is the only department which has students exchange programme with ELSA. Under this programme, students have an opportunity to go from Chandigarh to Stockholm and the other way around. There is provision for special lectures which are held in the memory of S. Singh Sarhadi and Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan. There are many scholars to give speeches on law cases.
