B.Ed & M.Ed Courses will be of two years

B  Ed & M Ed courses are going to be of two years duration.  On 16 September, 2016, Central Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani decided in the meeting with vice-chancellors of more than 250 central and state universities. Central Government wants to make changes in the education and training of teachers. This decision is considered as the first step by Smriti Irani in this area. The duration of these courses will increase accordingly.

To improve quality of education, the NCTE signed a MoU with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for evaluating the training programs.  The V-Cs said that the present one-year format for B Ed and M Ed programs is inadequate to train teachers.  239 universities offer teacher education programs and teacher education curriculum revised by only 73 universities. The teachers who already done these courses have to face refresher courses time to time. Every university has to prepare such refresher courses.

In B Ed & M Ed courses, new techniques of teaching will be included. New trainees will get the benefit of this scheme. So, this benefit will pass to their students too. Teachers training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) were discussed in a meeting between the HRD ministry, the UGC, the NCERT and the NCTE.

A committee set up by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in July had said that the extension in course duration should be implemented in phases over 5 years, beginning with the academic year 2016 and ending in 2019-20.

The Poonam Batra committee directed teachers’ education institutions to offer multiple programs in humanities, sciences and social sciences. HRD Minister Smriti Irani called for teachers’ education to be integrated with the higher education system. At present, though training programs for secondary and higher-secondary levels for teacher training are part of the university system, those for elementary schools are under the state boards.

VCs will look into the vista of university departments opening courses on campus as well as academic for the entry and level of certification and it should be diploma or post-graduate diploma. The meeting will estimate the execution of National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education (2016) with focusing on quality of teacher education. The meeting will also spotlight on rapid implementation of the NCFTE curriculum framework in all universities.

On the Teachers’ Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focused on teachers’ training. PM NarendraModi had advised teachers during his address to train in ICT so that they could pass on it to students.
