According to the new rules, the students are allowed to complete their B. Ed or M. Ed Courses within three years from the registration. What are the changes according to the new rules? Let us see:

    New regulations:

    • According to the new rule, 80% of lecture is compulsory to enter into the final exam for these courses. But, presently, this attendance percentage requirement is 75%.
    • The teacher-student ratio is also changed by NCTE. Presently, each teacher is handling 14 students, but from 2016-17, there will be 25 students for each teacher.
    • In the present one-year course, it is compulsory that future teachers will have to take school teaching for 40 days, while according to the new rule it will be 16 weeks school teaching to provide practical teaching experience.
    • As per the new guidelines, the B. Ed colleges will have to reapply for gaining recognition from NCTE after five years.
    • NCTE has also sent letters to colleges to increase the least teaching experience to become the principal of a B. Ed College to 15 years. At present, the teaching experience required to become a principal in these colleges is 10 years.

What is the reason behind this change in course duration?

This introduction was made as per the recommendation of Government of India with a view to change the course structure as per the current modern world. Also, the changes are introduced with a view to improve the role of future teachers in teaching as per the current employment opportunities. An educational committee was set up to conduct a research on this and on the basis of the recommendations of this committee, the above-mentioned changes are planned to be introduced from the academic year 2016-2017.

    Positive comments:

This new change is invited by many educationists stating that it will play a major role towards creating competent teachers for the future generation students.

    Negative comments:

Even though, educationists invite this change, some students who are from poor financial background are of the opinion that it will be difficult for them to manage the fee to be paid towards the course for two years. This is because the fee structure will naturally be higher as compared to the one-year B. Ed and M. Ed courses.

In addition to the above-mentioned recommendations given to B. Ed and M. Ed Colleges, they are also recommended by NCTE, to make some changes in their infrastructure, laboratory and classroom settings as well. Many educational institutions have begun to accommodate the changes recommended by NCTE all over India to get approval for 2016-17 courses.
