Gone are the days when the students opted for the commerce stream in +2 only as a second option after the science stream. Also the commerce stream is no longer pursued by only those who are looking at maintaining family business. With the careers options in commerce undergoing a sea change both in terms of options and scope, commerce has become a sought after and popular option among students.

If the student wishes to pursue the commerce degree in India +2 he will have to study subjects like Economics, Accountancy, business Mathematics and Business studies. Commerce is offered in both undergraduate course and postgraduate course.There are several career options that open up for the student after the commerce stream. Charted accountancy, business management, cost and works, accountancy, company secretary, actuarial science, charted financial analyst are some of the fields that are directly to the subjects in the commerce stream.

These days CA aspirants are busy burning their midnight oil preparing for the first hurdle on their way to becoming a charted accountant the CPT. This year the common profiency test or CPT as it commonly called scheduled to be held on December 15th, 2016.

Charted accountancy has always been one of the most popular choices of the student studying commerce. With the rapid growth in the economy, the careers in finances and accounts have gained tremendous popularity. Charted Accountancy the core of all business is dynamic, challenging in and rewarding profession and continuous to attract the large number of aspirants year after the year.

What does the charted accountant do?

As a CA you work will involve compiling, analyzing, verifying and also reporting on the financial affairs of business and individuals. You will be responsible for providing a wide range of advice about the financial control and planning to companies, public bodies and private citizens.

On becoming a CA

The study route of the student who is interested in pursuing the career in charted accountancy essentially involves 3 main stages enrolling and appearing for the common profience  test, appearing for the clearing  the integrated professional competence course and lastly clearing the CA final examination.

Following is the detailed outline of the stages involved in becoming CA

You are first required to register with the Institute of charted accountants of India for the common profiency test after passing class 10th.

You can then appear for the CPT after appearing for your 10+2 exams i.e. the senior secondary examination. The ICAI conducts CPT twice a year i.e. the months of June and December .However students have to register for these exams before 1st April and 1st October respectively. Students can only appear for CPT after successfully completing the specified period of 60 days from the date of registration.

After the students have successfully cleared their 10+2 exams and CPT, students are then eligible to enroll for group1 or group 2 or both the groups 1 and 2 of Integrated

Professional Competence Course by ICAI.

After enrolling for IPCC, students are then required to successfully complete 1 9 months study course from the date of IPCC registration,

After completing one week orientation course of 35 hours and 100 hour information technology training and clearing IPCC, students are then required to register and also practice as an articled assistant for the 3 yrs.

During their training, the students also need to register and simultaneously prepare for CA final course

During their last 12 months of their training, students have to undergo a general Management and communication skills.

During the last 6 months of their training, students become eligible to appear for the final examination.

After successfully completing GMCS and clearing the CA Final exams, students can then enroll as the member of ICAI and be designated as the charted accountant.

Management studies

The popular choice among the students. In this course you learn how to manage a business professionally and can opt for a degree or diploma in management. Students who are take up management as the career option after class 12th can opt for BBA, BBS or BBM. These courses are typically of 3 yrs duration where the students are shaped to meet the industry standards in the field they wish to specialize in.

Company secretary is another interesting career option that will require you to deal with aspects of management which relate to the company as legal entity. Interested students can apply for the 3 year company secretary course after passing the 10+2 examination.

Chartered Financial Analyst: The chief responsibility of charted financial analyst is to manage in the areas of financial accounting, management accounting, financial management, Investment management, security evaluation, project planning, venture capital management and credit rating. This is 3 yrs course that can be pursued after graduation.

In addition the student from the commerce stream always has the option to pursue careers in any of the non -science fields such as designing, hospitality and tourism, mass media and journalism, law, advertising, civil services etc.
