Higher Studies Options In Economics

Economics is one of the best subjects coming under the category of social sciences and this discipline varies from other disciplines in a number of ways. After completion of higher secondary with good grades and marks, students can either join a five-year integrated PG course or three year degree course.

Details about integrated PG course:

Integrated five-year PG course is offered only by a few institutions in India. The IIT, Chennai institute’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offer an innovative and unique five-year PG course for meritorious higher secondary students that lead to PG degree in three disciplines, namely; English studies, development studies and economics. The unique feature of this course is that it permits students in selecting their disciplines after giving them a wide exposure to social sciences and humanities.

At Institute of Information Technology, students are provided with rigorous training in areas like computing skills, quantitative and statistical skills and economic applications and theory. The course also offers revelation to other areas like literacy, communications, languages, history, philosophy, sociology and psychology. With the help of elective and dissertation courses, the course takers will have to scope for specialization in areas like finance, international trade, banking, environment, health care and education as well. Students with Master of Arts in Economics can look for employment opportunities in different sectors like education, public and private sector organizations.

Admission:

Admission to this course is done through the Humanities and Social Entrance Examination that is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology. The test will be of multiple choice format and the question paper will have questions under general knowledge, quantitative ability, analytical ability, comprehension and English skills with duration of three hours. The questions will be based on ecology, environment, contemporary world affairs, Indian society and economy since independence. This entrance test is conducted in different cities in India like Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Trichy, Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

Minimum eligibility:

The minimum eligibility to apply for HSEE examination is higher secondary or equivalent with a minimum of 60% of marks in aggregate. In the case of candidates falling under SC/ST category, the minimum marks required is 55% in the qualifying examination. The notification for this exam is done during December/January months and the test is generally conducted during the month of May each year. The total number of seats available for the course is 46 for all three specializations. The semester fee for the course is Rs.6150 and the caution deposit is Rs.2000 and one-time payment of Rs.1750. There may be variation in the fee from time to time.
