The History and the Legacy:

It was Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who focused on the long-term economic and spiritual well-being of all Indians. Conception of the IITs, which the Indian Parliament affirmed to be the "Institutes of National Importance," was an essential element in this long-term policy. The justification given for this step was logical enough - India needed knowledge in science and technology to shape a "prosperous" nation The

IIT Factor:

On the recommendations of the committee headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar to establish "higher technical institutions" across India along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the IIT colleges in India were established to fill the knowledge gap. The main focus was to be on research and postgraduate education that would keep India on the prominent edge of awareness in science and technology for building a thriving country.

Since the majority of the Indian population was poor. Hence proficient education was the only way to empower the people and give them self-sufficiency, free from any dependence. This would further enhance people's skills and finally their incomes by using science and technology to improve the processes, products, and infrastructure used.

The Road Ahead

Although the IIT brand gives you that cutting edge over any other educational institute in India. Even in the mainstream industry, the competitiveness is fast increasing and IIT colleges in India are lagging behind to a great extent.

Established with the purpose of leading the nation in R&D by concentrating on ways to strengthen Indian society by raising the incomes of the poor. Hence reducing the gap between the rich and the poor. IITs are not producing enough PhD students skilled sufficient to meet the faculty needs of other IITs.

Being adaptive to the dynamic demands of the educational arena as well as the mainstream industry is the key to sustaining the trust and appreciation that IITs enjoy.
