The University Grants Commission Regulation 2009 dated 1st of June 2009 has recommended that all universities should admit candidates to the Ph. D only on the basis of the entrance test. On the basis of this regulation by the UGC, the Maharaja Sayajirao University shortly called as PSU, has introduced the PET test from the year 2010. However, candidates with National/State Eligibility Examination scores need not have to take up the PET test conducted by MSU for admission to the Ph. D course.
Eligibility for PET:
Candidates with recognized PG degree or equivalent qualification with a minimum of 50% of equivalent marks can apply to this test. As mentioned earlier, candidates with NET/SET scores like JRF/ICMR/DBT/GPAT/GATE need not have to take up the PET test. In addition, candidates with valid M. Phil qualification are also exempted from PET.
Candidates appearing for PET will have to remember that their PET score will be valid for 2 years from the date of publishing of results. On successful completion of PET and Personality Test, candidates will be called for registration as per Ph. D ordinance of the MSU.
The PET test will be conducted by MSU and it will have three parts. Part A involves General Aptitude, Part B will be discipline wise and Part C involves personality test. Part C will be personality test. Here are some details about each of these 3 parts:
- Part A – General Aptitude, will have 35 questions with 2 marks for each question. The test will be conducted only in English.
- Part B – Discipline wise, will have 50 questions with 2 marks for each. Except for test of language, all other questions will be given only in English.
- Part C – Personality test can be taken only by candidates, who has successfully cleared the written test.
Standard for qualifying in written test:
For both part A and B, there will be 25% of negative mark for every wrong answer. Candidates securing more than 50% mark in each part, which means 35 marks in Part A and 50 marks in Part B and those making an aggregate of 60% of marks, which means 102 out of 170 will become eligible to take up the Personality Test.
The fee to be paid by general/OBC category candidates is Rs.1500 and the same for SC/ST/PH/VH candidates is Rs.1000.
Fee payment mode:
This fee might vary this year and in the following years and last year this was the fee charged by MSU. The fee should be paid only through Demand Draft drawn in favor of the Coordinator of PET Examination, Vadodara and payable at Vadodara at any Nationalized bank. The fee paid in other modes like cheque, pay order, money order and cash will never be accepted. Fee once paid by applicants will never be repaid under any situations. The DD will have to be submitted along with the print out of the online application submitted by the applicants. They are also recommended to keep a Xerox copy of the DD for future reference.
