UPSC CSAT Controversy is one of the important news coming in news and newspaper every day.

Students demand for changing pattern introduced in 2016. This made headline of every newspaper. Pattern introduced in 2016 made the paper only in favour of English medium students and science students.

Controversy on:

Pattern introduced in 2016 is only for urban not for rural students.

Till 2016, UPSC had two papers – general studies and optional subject. An optional subject means students have to choose one of subject from the list given by UPSC. But now UPSC replace this by aptitude test which include comprises comprehension, interpersonal skills including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc. - Class X level), The syllabus also has data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. - Class X level) and English language comprehension skills (Class X level). Protestors think that this pattern is creating unequal competition.

Reason for Controversy:

Two Reasons for controversy:

  • Pattern of paper introduced in 2016
  • English to Hindi translation by Google translator

Pattern of paper introduced in 2016

As the syllabus of UPSC CSAT include logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem solving, general mental ability and data interpretation which is in favour of science or, more specifically, Engineering background students who are already studied this topics and have very good command over this. But for the humanities student this is not in there practise so performance in exam is effected by this.

Hindi medium students or other local language student are also not taking advantage of this syllabus even they are science student because second paper include English language comprehension skills  and that is against students from a Hindi-medium background.

Brilliant and bright students from Hindi medium or non-Hindi medium aren’t coming in merit only because of their bad command in English language. In other hand, English medium student take advantage of the same. The protesters claim that since the changes were introduced in 2016, the number of Humanities students clearing the preliminary exam has fallen drastically, while the number of those with Science/Engineering background has shot up. While the general studies (GS) paper has a minimum cut-off of 30 marks, for CSAT it is 70 marks, Protesters said, people who perform poorly in GS also qualify. CSAT is aptitude-based and aptitude cannot be improved much. CSAT should not be given more weightage.

English to Hindi translation by Google translator:

Controversy is also raised on the Google Translator. This translator is used to translate English question of CSAT to Hindi Language and extremely poor quality of Google translator is confirm as it is giving literal meaning of the word. For example the word steel plant was translated into 'Loohe Ka Paudha

Recent news on UPSC CSAT:
