Challenges Faced By A Fresher College Student

Every year millions of young men and women get admission into UG and PG Courses in colleges and universities located in different parts of the world. Without any doubt, college will bring a dramatic change in the lifestyle and culture of students after having spent these many years in schools. They will really feel the pressure to adjust themselves to the new situation as it is a major transition in life in most of the young children in their adolescence period. Some of them will be excited to take in the new experience of campus life, while some of them feel apprehensive about accepting the new change.

Regardless of your feeling about the new educational arena, talking to people, who have recently undergone such a transition, will be helpful. Here are some of the common challenges that can be expected in the first year of college campus life:

Unknown atmosphere and new relationships:

  • It is highly important for the students in the first year of their degree course to adapt themselves in the unfamiliar environment and they will have to develop new friendships.
  • The great thing about college life is that it gives the opportunity for young students to interact with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Understanding about differences and similarities about each other will develop your experience.

Adjusting roommates:

  • If you have got admission to a state or country away from your home, you will have to live with roommates at the college campus hostel.
  • This is the most challenging situation faced by many students as they will have to adjust with the roommates with different boundaries and requirements.
  • Compromising and communicating with the roommates at this stage will help you in achieving smoother transition.

Greater personal freedom:

  • For most of the students this is the first time they start to live on their own. So, they get the freedom and independence for the first time in their lives. When you too are in such a situation you will get the freedom to make your own choices and decisions for the first time in your life.
  • This new freedom will bring you excitement and it will be overwhelming as well.
  • You should enjoy this experience, to gain the best satisfaction from it.

Increased responsibility:

  • In addition to freedom, you will also experience responsibilities for the first time in your life.
  • At this stage, you should address many complex responsibilities like socializing, participating in extracurricular activities, making new friends in addition to studying.

Changes in relationships:

  • There will be changes in your relationship as well. You will be making friends from different cultures and financial backgrounds.
  • You must learn how to balance a sense of connection and separation at college. This will help you in concentrating both in your studies and in enjoying your free time as well.

Apart from the above-mentioned challenges, you will face other challenges like time management and increased educational demands as well.

So, you should be ready to handle the above-mentioned challenges in an efficient and effective manner.
