Many USAC programs offer internships; it still may be available on a case by case basis. In general, USAC internships: offer 1-3 credits rather than financial compensation, will have varied schedules and number of work hours/credits which are determined by the schedule of USAC courses, are only offered to students enrolled full-time in that particular study abroad program, will attempt to meet internship requirements at the home university (however please obtain approval prior to enrolling), require a 3.0 GPA or higher (exceptions may be made if requested, but are not guaranteed), require refundable fee of $100 (this fee will be refunded upon the successful completion of the internship), must be applied for prior to start of program (unless otherwise noted-see description for each program). Typically, internships are only offered during the semester/yearlong programs (due to time constraint) and students must have advanced knowledge of the language within that country to participate (however there can be exceptions- ask USAC about specifics). If you are interested in an internship and meet the qualifications, indicate “Internships” on your USAC application under courses or on your Course and Tour Selection form (after you are signed up). From there, USAC will give you an additional application and may request additional information. All internships are not completely finalized until the students arrive on-site (even though they must be requested in advance). The options are endless and our staff is willing to try and find an internship that will best relate to each individual student depending on their goals and major.
Participation in an internship abroad is an excellent way to immerse oneself in another country's culture and way of life. There are multiple ISA academic programs that offer internship or service learning opportunities through the host university offering credit in the form of a transcript. These opportunities add another dimension to the study abroad experience through daily interactions with locals, resulting in a greater understanding of the culture, community, and language of the host country. Once students arrive in-country, there is a language proficiency test, application process, and competitive interview with the company or organization one wishes to intern with, therefore, internships are not guaranteed. The placement is facilitated by the university based on the student's professional and academic experience and personal interest. Sites that offer credit-bearing internships while also participating in an ISA academic program are Brussels, Belgium / London, England / Rome and Florence, Italy / Bilbao, Granada, and Sevilla, Spain / and Baranquilla, Columbia.
