For Aspiring Engineers

Although the most feared season of examinations has ended but now is the time for the real test. Students all over India are now worried over what career to choose, which is on the most crucial moments. The most popular and widely appreciated choice is engineering because of all the wide range of career options it brings along with itself. Apart from all the wide range of career option, engineering also offers a reputed social status and a well paved path for the success. From numerous streams available within engineering, picking up one and getting along with can be confusing. This article will discuss about few streams of engineering and why those streams are beneficial for the students.

Parents and guardians often tend to forget to ask their children about their choice of stream.  Dattaprasad Naik, an engineer, RND, Inventron  stated that he was in so much confusion when he was deciding between various streams available and picking up one was not easy.  But eventually Dattaprasad chose electronics and telecommunication and he was delighted with his decision. His interests in toy robots as kid was finally getting serious and he could now learn the science behind it and probably build robots of his own.  He was also informed that the probability of getting placed is higher with this stream.

His interests in toy robots as kid was finally getting serious and he could now learn the science behind it and probably build robots of his own.  He was also informed that the probability of getting placed is higher with this stream. Although he warns students that the situations related to placements keep alternating and hence that cannot be a major factor while choosing the stream.

He further stated that the stream of electronics and telecommunication centers on how electronic appliances work on the base level and the entire theory related to the working and mechanism of various electronic components, which are infrastructure to all the electronic based circuits.  Few examples of the same are- diodes, transistors and capacitors. The basic concept is to study about these devices and then how to assemble them. As all the devices made till date are based on the mentioned concept.  After choosing the respective stream you will get to learn about various integrated circuits, their mechanism, various communication devices and the related components. You will also come across a lot of other aspects of electronic world which include power electronics, networks along with analyzing analog as well as digital signals. Other aspects include coding also referred as programming which is not just limited to microcontrollers and microprocessors.

Electrical is another stream which is not very far away from electronics and telecommunication. The topics covered in the both of the streams are nearly same. According to Naik, major difference between the two is as follows- electrical lays less emphasis on communication and centers more on devices that are the infrastructure or building blocks of almost every power and required energy. Few examples of the same include power lines, transformers and much more. Working and analyzing several motors which are based on high voltage concept is also a very major part of the mentioned stream.  The basics of programming related to computer is also included in this stream and is beneficial for students who are interested in consumer electronics, various daily use appliances, robotics and automated systems.

BE in IT and recently qualifying MBA from GIM, Darshan Desai illustrates the aspects of Information Technology commonly known as IT. The various aspects covered under the mentioned stream include learning several programming languages like c, Java, C++ and much more. All these languages will be covered in detail in this stream with very little focus on other hardcore subjects as compared to hardware, mechanical and other similar aspects of engineering. Other aspects of the respective stream include database management, software testing, study of GUI also referred as Graphical user Interface, IT Security and other similar subjects. If a student is interested in studying the coding, developing algorithms and other similar things then Information Technology (IT) is the most suitable stream.

Students who were passionate about vehicles such as motorbikes, cars, planes and other real time objects that can be brought in motion using the technology of gears etc, then Mechanical is the best suited stream for such students. Achintya Kambli a faculty from Goa College of Engineering discusses about this stream and states that various interesting topic are covered under the respective branch which include material science for designing and analysis, fluid science, advanced principles of physics also the maintenance of the mentioned aspects.

Although there are various courses other than the mentioned ones, but these courses are some of the most prominent and evergreen branches of engineering.

Naik shares some views as to choose a stream towards which you have a constant inclination, as that drive will help you to achieve all the goals that you have planned in your mind, irrespective of the college you are getting into. A thing which every engineer eventually learns with time is that engineering is not merely a course as it ultimately becomes a way of life.
