With a view to provide education to all without any difference and to ensure that even for those who cannot physically attend colleges, the concept of open university was introduced. The first national Open University in India is the Indira Gandhi National Open University. The university introduced three new courses from January 2015 and one of them is the Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics, which is shortly called as PGDAST. This course is offered by the School of Sciences of the University.
Statistical Techniques deal with acquisition, representation, analysis and interpretation of data. Due to its potential application in different fields like agricultural development, social development and many other fields statistics is an emerging field and the demand for professionals in this field is increasing day after day. This is why the PGDAST course is developed by IGNOU to cater to the requirements of working professionals and graduates, who aspire for employment in different industries.
Aim of PGDAST:
The course aims at providing the hands-on training and knowledge in selected areas of statistics and to accustom the students with the use of statistical tools in the analysis of business, social and industrial data.
Details of the programme:
The programme that extends for 32 credits encompasses 9 courses out of which 6 are core mandatory papers and 3 are meant for students taking up industrial statistics specialization. Here is the list of courses:

Objective of the programme:
IGNOU has introduced the programme with the following objectives:
- To provide the course takers with the core knowledge needed for statistical applications
- To acquaint them with the use of statistics in applied sciences and industries
- To provide hands on training in chosen areas of statistics
- To provide them with the skills needed for using the suitable software programs in different fields.
Eligibility to apply:
The applicants must be graduates in any discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 50% of aggregate marks.
Medium of instruction and course duration:
The medium of instruction in English and the minimum duration of the course is one year, while the students are allowed to complete the course within three years from the date of registration.
The fee is Rs.6000/- for the entire programme.
Special instructions for applicants:
When enrolling for PGDAST programme, candidates should have a look at the following instructions for the first year. The course admission is done in two cycles and they are January Cycle and June Cycle and here is the instruction for both:
Candidates joining in the January cycle can take up the Term End Examination conducted by the university in June. However, they can attempt for only the first four courses mentioned above in June and the remaining can be taken up only in December term examination. For those getting admission in June Cycle, the months to take up the tests are December in the same year and June in the next year.
