3rd Status of mainstream education of disabled in India

Aligarh Muslim University (U.P.) and Banaras Hindu University (U.P.) had been courteous to admit 202 and 208 students respectively. However, 31 per cent of our elite universities which constitute to be 38 universities did not admit any student with disabilities. The universities are as follows:-

23 universities or premier institutes had the students with disabilities within only the number brackets of 5 and 20, the following premier institutes are among them:

1)       G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Uttaranchal.

2)       Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai, Chennai, Roorkee,

3)       Punjab University, Chandigarh,

4)       Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai,

The following premier institutes, out of 31 had only 5 or less disabled students in their institutes:

1)       University of Pune

2)       North Eastern Hill University (Shillong),

3)       Punjab Agricultural University (Ludhiana),

4)       Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur),

5)       School of Planning and Architecture (Delhi),

6)       National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Bangalore),

The following premier institutes, had not admitted any disabled student in their institutes:

1)       Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Karnataka)

2)       Rabindra Bharati University (Kolkata),

3)       University of Rajasthan,

5)       University of Allahabad,

6)       Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai),

Although 94 per cent of the universities, constituting 112 universities, but they did not provide any type of special equipment to them. This proves that the students with different types of disabilities had to manage their studies with their own means. The struggling parts are many for these students.

Clarification about the denial of permissions to the disabled students’ admission in the premier institutes

During the survey, the institutes were asked to explain their reasons of not according chances to the disabled students, only a few responded and others “fought shy of” explaining the reason. Those who responded were eloquent with the reply that they did not have trained staff to deal with the case. The numbers of these institutes were only 6. % other institutes explained about lack of infrastructure.

The above discussions highlight about the very grim situation of the higher educational facilities available to the most deserving class of our society. It is beyond any argument that the students, if given chance, can bring a “sea change” in our society. We have heard and read about many disabled scientists, music directors, legal luminaries, academicians, mountaineers and so on with different types of mild to severest disabilities in our country and around the world.  All these luminaries had established themselves with flying colours. They have not only contributed to the society, they have also paved the paths for the next generation by setting their examples. All of them are not only iconic in their fields; they have also brought about miracles for the mankind.

Shall we feel the needs of these persons with disabilities in a right way?  The more we care for them the less we will have to spend from our national exchequer.
