Career in Hotel Management

The word ‘Hotel’ is not just about food and/or stay anymore; it is now synonymous with terms like ‘HOSPITALITY’, ‘SERVICE’ and ‘CUISINES’. As per an analysis done by retail consultancy Technopak, at the end of 2016 the Indian hotel industry’s worth was estimated around US$ 17 billion. Of the total revenue, nearly 70 per cent is being contributed by the unorganized sector and the remaining 30 per cent (US$ 5 billion approx.) comes from the organized sector. The hotel industry is estimated to grow at a CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate) of around 15 per cent over the next five years. Also, with various factors like globalisation (hence increase in foreign tourists for business & leisure), increase in Indian tourists(with various states promoting local tourism thru websites and TV commercials), innumerable holiday packages being designed by various companies, foray of International hotel chains in India(Hilton, Shangri-La, Radisson, Marriott, Meridian, Sheraton, Hyatt, Holiday Inn, InterContinental), playing their role, the ‘food and stay’ business is definitely getting BIGGER by the day. There are uncountable restaurant chains (national & international); Resorts & Clubs; unclassified & Budget hotels and of course the star-rated hotels.

The key players in this industry are:

  • Indian Hotels- Luxury & mid-segment- Taj, Gateway, Vivanta, Ginger
  • ITC Welcomegroup- Luxury, budget & heritage hotels – ITC hotels, Sheraton, Fortune, etc
  • EIH – Business & Leisure- Oberoi & Trident
  • Carlson – Business, Luxury, cruises- Radisson, Park Plaza, Country Inns
  • Intercontinental – Luxury & mid-segment- Intercontinental, Holiday Inn, etc

While on one side, efforts are being made to bridge the demand-supply gap (in hotel rooms in India), on the other, there is range of employment opportunities from the industry coming to the fore which are out for catch. Of course one needs to have the required skills and qualification just like any other industry. There are a number of Institutes offering multiple courses at various levels, acting as a bridge between the potential candidates and the job providers. With such growth, demand is going to exceed supply by at least 100 per cent in coming years. There has also been a rush of international hotel chains towards India since the latter half of 2016. A lot of major hotels have announced their plans to expand their footprints in India. Thus domestic hospitality sector is expected to see investments of over US$ 11 billion by 2016, with 40 international brands making their presence in the country in the next few years. Demand revival and occupancy rates will result in higher profits for the hospitality sector in 2016, and thus create thousands of jobs at various levels.
