Even though, both these tests evaluate the English language skills of candidates on the basis of four parameters, the debate about the test to take continues among aspirants.

When you are trying to become a part of an internationally renowned university, you will surely not be interested in leaving anything on the stroke of luck, isn’t? To become a part of international classroom setting, it is important that international students from countries, where English is not the first language, should prove their proficiency in this language. The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are the two standardized English language tests that are widely accepted in most of the foreign universities. Let us get into the details about the parameters you will have to consider when you are in the process zeroing down between the two tests:

Conducting authority:

When IELTS is conducted jointly by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and the IDP Educational Australia pay attention on Queen’s English. When it comes to TOEFL, it is administered by the English Testing Service or ETS, who conducts this test with special attention to US English. If you are comfortable with UK English, the best thing you can do is to go for The International English Language Testing Services, while the other can be ideal, if you are good at US Accent.

Which of these tests to select should largely rely on the nation in which you are planning to do your higher studies. For instance, if your intended nation is Canada or US, TOEFL should be first choice. On the other hand, if you are heading to Australia or UK, the other can be the right choice.

Primary difference:

The fundamental difference between these two tests relies on the way in which your speaking ability is tested. When it comes to IELTS, you will have to speak in human voice and you will be required to interact with an examiner. On the other hand, in the case of TOEFL, you will have to answer through microphone and the conversation will be recorded and will be consequently reviewed by a panel of examiners. While the former school states that the method they follow is the ideal for testing, just because there are chances of bias in the latter, the latter states that their method assured fair decision. So, you can make your decision as per your choice.

Method of scoring:

The next important difference is the method of scoring. For instance, the former grades you on the scale of 0 to 9; the latter follows an all-inclusive grading method. The grading is done on a statistical manner on the basis of individual performance in all four parameters. In TOEFL, 120 is the highest score as 30 points are assigned to each of the four sections.

Memory recall:

When you opt for the former, you should have good capability to recall your memory. On the other hand, in the case of latter, the questions will be of multiple choice format.
