To become a lawyer:

To become a lawyer in India, you will have to get the Bachelor’s degree in law called as LLB, which is duly recognized by the Bar Council of India. This course is offered under two different categories in India, one is a five-year integrated course and the other is a three-year course.

Eligibility requirement:

Five-year course: Generally the five-year course is called as integrated five-year course as it confers both a degree and Bachelor of law on the candidates. So, the eligibility requirement for this course in most of the universities in India is a higher secondary with not less than 50% of marks. Generally, the age limit to get admission to this course is not more than 20 years.

Three-year course: There is no age limit for three-year course and for applying to this course, candidates must be graduates in any discipline with at least 50% of marks. For reserved category candidates, concession is given in the percentage of marks required in the qualifying examination.

Admission procedure:

Five-year course: There are 11 National Law Universities in India that conduct a Common Entrance Test called as Common Law Admission Test or CLAT. Other than these universities, there are also other universities and institutions that conduct their own entrance test for admission. Some of these tests include:

  • Symbiosis Entrance Test
  • NLU Delhi Admission Test
  • NLU Orissa Admission Test

There is also another common entrance test called as LSAT, which means Law School Admission Test, conducted by the Law School Admission Council and some universities admit candidates for the five-year integrated Bachelor of Law course on the basis of this score. There are also state level entrance examinations for admission to different state-level law colleges.

Three-year course: Only a few universities offer three-year programme like Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University that conduct their own entrance test for admission to this course.

What can lawyers do?

On successful completion of the course, the graduates have the following options:

  • They can join either the central or the state Bar Council and this is essential to practice as lawyers.
  • They can then join legal practice either as criminal or civil lawyers
  • They can join the judicial services of the state as Magistrates on passing the appropriate entrance examination and can work as judicial magistrates or civil judges.
  • They can take up Civil Service Examinations
  • They can look for job opportunities in different government and non-government organizations like advisory companies, consulting and law firms.
  • They can specialize in one of the different branches of law like tax, insurance, corporate, criminal or civil law.
  • They can also opt for a PG degree in law called as LLM
