Difference between CAT and GMAT

Common Admission Test (CAT) and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) are the tests conducted for the admission of Master of Business Administration (MBA).

CAT entrance exam is related for admission to two-year full-time MBA courses  while GMAT is related to full-time (one year or two-year) Post Graduate courses in management. These two entrance exams are most important exams for the admission of MBA in Indian Institute of Management (IIMs).

According to the recent report, 22878 applicants from India appeared for GMAT in the year 2013. This means that the number of aspirants has increased by 25% since 2010. Both the exams are difficult to pass. One need to prepare for this exam before 6 months of the exam scheduled. This will help an individual to get the good score in the above exams.

Difference between CAT and GMAT:

Common Admission Test (CAT):

  • CAT is the exam conducted for the admission of MBA in Indian Institute of Management (IIMs).
  • CAT exam happens once in a year.
  • CAT results are announced later at a fixed date.
  • The validity of CAT score is one year.
  • CAT score is accepted for two year full time MBA/PGP
  • CAT score is must for admission in IIMs and most of the other top business schools accept CAT score except the institutes that conduct their own entrance test for the admission.
  • CAT exam will be of 2 hours 50 minutes for total of 100 questions which is divided in to 2 sections: Quantitative ability & Data Interpretation, Verbal ability & logical reasoning.
  • The format of CAT exam is Computer based test.
  • An individual can register for CAT 2014 by visiting the official website of the CAT            //www.iimcat.ac.in
  • Fresh graduates and Professionals can apply for CAT exam if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT):

  • GMAT is the exam for the admission to MBA course in top business schools worldwide.
  • GMAT happens 5 times a year.
  • GMAT Score of verbal and quantitative section can be known immediately. But for official and total score, candidates need to wait for 3 weeks.
  • GMAT score is valid up to 5 years.
  • GMAT score is accepted for Full-time PGP either for 1 or 2 years.
  • GMAT exam score is accepted for admission at more than 200 courses offered at over 900 business schools.
  • GMAT will be of 3 hours 30 minutes which is divided in to 4 sections: Analytical writing assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative & verbal.
  • GMAT is of Computer- Adaptive Test.
  • An individual can register for GMAT at the nearest test center or by visiting the official website of the GMAT //www.mba.com/india
  • Fresh graduates and Professionals can apply for GMAT exam if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Both CAT and GMAT are the popular entrance exams conducted for the admission to MBA/PGP courses. CAT is the exam whose score is valid for 1 year and accepted only in the Business Schools located across India. GMAT is the exam whose score is valid for 5 years and accepted for the admission in the Business Schools located world- wide.

GMAT is the best exam as it provides many opportunities after completion of the entrance exam and one can complete the MBA degree in one of the top B-School or completion of the course studied through GMAT.
