Different Types of Group Discussion Topics

Group discussion sessions conducted during MBA admission is not the same and equal. The reason is that the B-Schools use different types of GD Topics to test the applicants. When some of them test the knowledge of candidates on topical issues, some are designed to test the lateral thinking ability of the candidates. Even, some B-Schools give case studies as group discussion topics for understanding the analyzing ability of the applicants and for identifying how well they frame their responses.

Classification of GD Topics:

Here are some details about each of these types along with examples:

Case-based topics:

Here, the participants will be provided with the details about a situation or a scenario and they are provided with the chance to discuss the issue openly with each other. In addition, some problems associated with the situation will also be explained and the participants will be asked to resolve the same. Mainly management related topics are given under this category. For instance, it can be like a conversation/argument between a boss and an employee.

Current topics:

As the name implies, the topics under this category will be on the basis of current affairs that is mostly talked in the nation. Even, international events might be given as a topic for discussion under this category. This type is meant for testing the general awareness of candidates

If a candidate does not know anything about the topic given, it is better to carefully watch what other participants will have to say, and after gaining some knowledge, the candidate will have to get into the discussion at the right time.

Opinion based topics:

As the name implies, under this category, candidates will be provided with the opportunity to share their opinion or point of view. Under this category, the presentation skills of candidates will be tested and even their leadership ability will be tested. Some of the examples under this category include joint family and nuclear families, arranged and love marriage, women – boon or bane to the society, etc.

Argumentative/controversial topics:

These are topics with some controversies or arguments around them. The controversies can be anything like gender, religion, politics, etc. As these are opinion-based, there are chances of many differences of opinions among the participants. Some examples include quota system in India, politics in India, etc.

Abstract topics:

These are random topics with some history or tangible case study related to them. It is meant for testing the creativity and imaginative skills of participants. When discussing topics under this type, the participants will have to think out of the box. Generally, topics under this type can be interpreted by candidates in different ways.

Of course, as the name of the category ‘Factual topics’ denotes, these are fact based like can be something that happened in the nation in the past.

You should take branch according to your interest, if you have interest in software or programming choose computer science, if you have interest in machines, choose mechanical, etc, some good engineering colleges are KD College of Engineering and Technology for Women ; Suraj College of Engineering and Technology ; Yaduvanshi College of Engineering and Technology for Women
