About the Institute
The Indian Institutes of Management, Ahemadabad is the 2nd institute after IIM-Calcutta, was established on 16th December, 1961 to meet the growing need of the professional managers for efficiently managing the growing needs of the industries. The objective behind establishing the institute was to assist the industries with consulting and research services and providing best quality management education to the future managers of the country, if not to the world. The institute is an autonomous body, actively collaborating with Government of Gujrat, Government of India and the Industry. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the well known physicist and native of the soil played the key role in setting up the institute, so he was made the Honorary Director for the initial 3 years of the institute.
Collaborations with foreign institute
The prominent and world famous Harvard Business School has the collaboration with this premier institute. The collaboration establishes IIMA’s vision to education.
World wide recognition
The institute has commissioned several projects, which are funded and supported by the elite international organizations like World Bank, UNO, Ford Foundation and Indian elite agencies like Planning Commission, NCERT and both State and Central Government Ministries.

Post Graduate Program in Management: It is a 2 year full time residential course. This course is the flagship program of the institute. The admission procedure of the course is known as the toughest among all the MBA courses in the world. The course is recognized for its rigor and depth in its category. In the first year all the core program that includes compulsory courses are covered for developing the foundations of management theory. In the second year, elective courses of candidates’ choices are covered so that they can develop their proficiency in their own area of preference.
Post Graduate Program in Agribusiness Management: It is a fully residential two year management course. The program has been designed to meet the specific requirements of the managerial professional in the agriculture sector. The first year of the program consists of compulsory courses, comprising of varied range of business practices and management theories, just as the PGPM program. Students learn specialized skills in the second year, required for the managers in the field of agri-business and its sub-sectors.
Post Graduate Program in Management for Executives: It is a full time one year residential program for the executives with proven work experience in the corporate sector. With the emphasis on international exposure and cross culture, the course focuses on general management. One of the terms of the course is ‘international immersion program’, in which a student has to undergo two intensive academic weeks in a foreign location.
Admission procedure: The candidate must have attained 27 years of age and a bachelor’s or its equivalent degree in any discipline
Duration of this course: Vary between 9 to 12 weeks
Fellow program in management: It is the doctoral program of the institute. It is basically a research program and so the students virtually become the part of the sectoral/functional groups and derive the basic knowledge in theory while practical aspects push them up in their own area of specialization.
Post Graduate program in Public Management and policy: It is a full time program in public management and policy. The program focuses on governance, policy formulations and their implementations, development of infrastructure and management of public enterprises. The programs are meant for civil servants, managers of public enterprises and government sectors and executives who are engaged in public management in the private sectors,
Faculty development program: It is a residential program of four month duration. The program is aimed to cater to the needs of faculty members of the management education and training institutes. After starting the course in 1979, the course has been continuously restructured and modified for incorporating new methodologies in management training.
Armed Forces program: It is a full time program of six months duration, exclusively designed for the officers in the armed forces for imparting contemporary global management and corporate management practices.
Ranking: IIM-A is the sole Indian Institute to have been listed by The Economist. The institute also has achieved many other ranking from different Medias.

The institute is known for its diversity of in-depth researches and publications on varied subjects. The doctoral students, research staff and faculty of the institute have together contributed to 1116 articles in dailies & periodicals, 193 book chapters, 3864 journal articles, 451 monographs and 560 books since 1967.
