The city is home to many institutes that are internationally recognised, which includes Tata Management Training Centre, National Institute of Bank Management, National Insurance Academy.

The city has a lot to offer to the MBA aspirants. Let us talk about the factors that make Pune a leading MBA destination in India:

  • Pune is ideally located in the prosperous state of Maharashtra, at an arm’s length from Mumbai; and has a very good climate. The city has good infrastructure and cost of living especially real estate is affordable (in comparison to its extremely costly neighbour Mumbai).
  • From Market and Industries perspective, Pune is a rich belt. There is a sprawl of industries and establishments in and around Pune, so that majority of MBA pass outs from this tier 2 city are absorbed, even if they are from Institutes that don’t officially come into A-lister category.
    • Manufacturing Industries and Automotive Sector: The engineering conglomerate Kirloskar Group was the first to bring industry in Pune. Tata Motors, Mercedes Benz, Kinetic Motors, General Motors, Volkswagen, Fiat, etc have their presence in the city. Other than that, nearby places like Sholapur, Kolhapur, Satara, Nashik, Nagpur, etc are known Industrial belts and all together are able to absorb the complete crop of management students from within the state.

    • Hospitality: Umpteen number of Star hotels, luxury and moderate hotels and restautrants are spread all across Mumbai, Pune and Goa. Needless to say, the food-and-stay business is booming like never before and poses the need of a big number of MBAs.
    • Telecom: Reliance & Vodafone (Mumbai), Idea (Pune) are just a few big names in the Telecom Industry present in the Mumbai-Pune region.
    • Consulting: Accenture Services Pvt. Ltd., MindTree, Ernst & Young Private Limited
    • Construction: with state-of-the-art Construction activities (IT Parks, National Expressways, Hotels, etc) being carried out in the Mumbai-Pune region, this is also a booming sector from opportunities standpoint.
    • New businesses like floriculture and food processing started to take root in and around the city.
  • Pune is also a nature’s delight with a splash of natural beauty all over the city. The cultural capital of Maharashtra epitomizes the Maratha culture by emphasizing on the education, arts and crafts, music and theatre. The culture of Pune reflects a blend of traditions and modernity.

Similar to Delhi and Mumbai, Pune is also a major hub of management education. The B-Schools in Pune under the Symbiosis International University (SIU) like Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Symbiosis Institute of International Business (SIIB) are synonymous with MBA in Pune. SIMS is considered among one of the top B Schools in Pune. It is one of the most looked out option for the students to study MBA in Pune.

Of these, about 165 are located in Pune city, and others are dispersed in smaller areas around the city. Almost all these Institutes are Un-aided (only 3 Institutes are University Departments), Non-Minority based and Non-autonomous. Only about 13 of them are based on Linguistic Minority like Hindi or Religious Minority like Muslims. About 134 Institutes are affiliated to the “Pune University” and 35 of them to the neighbouring “Shivaji-Solapur University”. The total intake of students in these Institutes (located in Pune city) is approximately 15000, which is easily 40-45% of the total state intake.

Downsides: For a couple of years now, the excitement to pursue an MBA in Pune has come down a little because of some reasons:

1. What was an advantage earlier has become a disadvantage now. With the cost of real estate shooting up, and the huge influx of people having taken a toll on the infrastructure of the city, people from other states are now rethinking before landing here.

2. There has been a steep rise in the number of MBA Institutions in Delhi and NCR region, and coupled with ample employment opportunities there itself, it leaves people with lesser incline to make a move to Pune.

3. If we look at the Top 50 MBA Institutes in the country (on any website, journal or other source), we realize that other than a couple of Symbiosis Institutes, none of the other Institutes from Pune make it to the list of Premier B-schools in the country.

4. Also, the average salaries of the Pune University pass outs are somewhere Rs 180,945 - Rs 1,356,908; while that of Mumbai is Rs 258,420 - Rs 2,116,771 and Delhi: Rs 177,758 - Rs 1,998,757.

However, one cannot undermine the immense education and employment opportunities in this city, which continues to house thousands of students from across the country.
