MBA in Marketing Vs. MBA In Human Resource Management

After deciding to do Master of Business Administration course on completion of degree, many students get a confusion between Human Resource Management and Marketing as these are two most sought after specializations in the MBA course. The great thing about these two specializations is that candidates with graduation in any stream of education can join these specializations and there is no specific requirement with respect to the post qualifying degree. Also, both these specializations offer job opportunities in different firms regardless of the field in which the organizations operate and the candidates can also get good pay packages as well. Here is a comparison between these two specializations and this comparison will help during the Master of Business Administration admission to choose the appropriate specialization for students:

Focus of study:

The HR Management pays attention to employee legal issues, human resource development and people management, while the marketing specialization focus on people management in addition to advertisement, finance, branding, sales and marketing. In the former case, people management involves management of workforce in an organization, while in the case of latter, people management involves management of prospective customers.

Head-to-head roles:

The HR managers will be responsible for delegation of duties to the right person, which is important for ensuring stability and smooth sailing of the organization. This specialization in MBA teaches the students on how to evaluate performance and they will also teach students on how to design successive plans for creation of equal balance and for ensuring talent preservation. When this is the case of HR, the marketing team in organization will be responsible for bringing in money to the organization through generation of sales. In marketing specialization, students will be taught how to design innovative promotional strategies.

Work profile:

The work profile of HRM specialized candidates include:

  • Career appraisal, planning and counseling
  • Designing performance management systems
  • Training and orientation of employees
  • Recruitment and selection of appropriate talents for the organization

The work profile of candidates with marketing specialization involves:

  • Client research
  • Organizing marketing campaigns
  • Branding
  • Setting marketing goals
  • Designing marketing strategies
  • Assessing and analyzing product feasibility

Career demand:

The career demand in the case of HR is medium. The reason is that even though, the HR department is responsible for controlling the entire crew of employees working for the organization, the HR department will be generally smaller and so lesser recruitment alone is made. On the other hand, the career demand for marketing experts is higher as organizations need different marketing teams to work on different strategies.

Career risks:

Generally, HR profession is something that is not dictated by the conditions prevailing in the market. This is why candidates working for this field can enjoy better job security and lesser risk. Marketing job is generally based on performance of the unpredictable market. Furthermore, it is a field, wherein candidates can grow in the career ladder only on the basis of their performance. When there is a market slash, slow-performers are at higher risk of removed from the organization.

Which one to choose?

  • Candidates can choose the specialization that appeals them
  • One of the specializations should be chosen based on their future goals to work on the appropriate field.
