Contradicting all reports of a global economic slowdown, students of prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad have a reason to rejoice. Interestingly it is the finance sector, reportedly worst hit by the slowdown, which is offering unbelievable salaries to IIM students.

In the last two months, three students of IIM-A have bagged astonishing Rs 1 crore-plus pre-placement offers (PPO) each from financial institutions. While two job offers have been made by Deutsche Bank for their Singapore and London offices, one is from Barclays in Hong Kong. As per IIM-A sources, one of these offers is the highest PPO ever offered on the campus. Companies offer PPO to a student based on his performance during the summer placement.

Reports say that out of 380 students in the current second-year post-graduate programme in management (PGP), more than 50 have already got PPOs. Many of these offers have come from prestigious retail and investment banking companies like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Nomura.

These PPOs have come at a time when students feared that the economic gloom would be reflected in the financial sector, and ultimately have an adverse impact on their placements. The PPOs bring a sense of optimism among IIM students even though they are keeping their fingers crossed. However, there is cloud of apprehension that the tide can change anytime in the coming months due to the unstable global economic scenario.

Speaking about this year's placement trend to The Times of India group, IIM-A director Samir Barua, says, "During the worst ever placement scene for IIM-A during 2016 slowdown, many offers were not honoured. This time though, we feel the recruiters were more confident while making PPOs. But, we have changed our placement strategy to lessen the slowdown impact." It is for this reason that the institute has diversified and is expecting new set of recruiters from new sectors coming for recruitment.

However, IIM-A has published a clarification on their official blog saying, "we would like to clarify in interest of the entire community that this information is unsubstantiated. Neither the Placement Committee nor the students have released any specific details to the media regarding the PPO offers and salary details."
