Most of the B-Schools in India offer admission to the fresh graduates for their MBA programme. But, top B-Schools generally give weightage to experienced candidates when there is heavy competition for admission among MBA aspirants. Even, in some schools it is important that candidates must possess at least 2-10 years of work experience to seek admission to the Master of Business Administration programme.
Do B-Schools look for experienced candidates?
It is quite acceptable that there are strong reasons for B-Schools to consider experienced candidates for their MBA programme as against fresh graduate. The main reason is that the candidates with work experience can gain better edge with respect to leadership qualities and competency. In addition to these two skills, experienced candidates will also possess other qualities like managerial abilities, communication skill, etc. Of course, all these competencies depend on the field in which they have worked earlier. Top B-schools generally pay attention towards gathering diversified group of professionals in the classrooms in such a way that great value can be added to the class activities and projects. These top B-schools generally look for candidates with experience in different industries and do not give preference to professionals from particular field alone.
1. Chance to spend lesser time with admission council:
After spending time in preparing for the MBA admission tests, the aspirants do not get the chance to spend long time with the admission council of B-Schools. Generally, colleges only have utmost 1-2 hours for judging the capabilities of candidates. On the other hand, when the candidates have work experience, it will be of great help to the admission authorities to judge the capabilities of the applicants. The reason is that work experience of the applicant will take a volume about what the candidate has been doing for so long in the organization and also about the benefits he bought to the employer. This is one of the reasons why B-Schools look for experienced candidates.
2. Worked with big brands:
Generally, when B-Schools look for work experience, they also look the name and brand of the company for which an applicant has worked so far or is working. Here too the value addition that the candidate has brought to the employer will be judged to identify the dedication and interest of the applicants.
3. Satisfaction of employer:
This is also taken as a consideration before providing admission to an aspirant with work experience. It is felt by B-schools that a candidate, who has earned satisfaction from the employer, will be in a position to perform well in academics as well due to the work experience gained.
When it comes to work experience, top B-schools evaluate a wide range of things. For instance, if a candidate has worked for the IT field, it will be judged whether the candidate was just confined to coding job alone or whether he has experience in cross functional activities. Other considerations like whether the candidate has traveled extensively and whether the candidate has worked as a team or initiated any teamwork or related activities in the past will also be made.
