General Nursing And Midwifery Course In India - Some Details To Know

The Indian education system has a number of professional educational fields and there are also councils to manage the fields. Like there are Medical Council of India and All India Council for Technical Education. When it comes to education in the field of nursing the council is Nursing Council in India. The Nursing Council Act was established in the year 1948 for constitution of a council of nurses for safeguarding the quality of nursing education in the nation. The mandate of this council was for the establishment and maintenance of uniform standards for education in this para medical field. This council is also called as Indian Nursing Council (INC) and it is a statutory body that regulates education through prescription, inspection, examination, certification and maintenance of stands for a uniform syllabus at each level of education in this field.

Levels of education:

There are 6 levels of education in this field and they are:

  1. Multi Purpose Health Worker Female Training (ANM or MHPHW-F)
  2. Female Health Supervisor Training (HV or MPHS-F)
  3. General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)
  4. Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  5. Master of Science in Nursing
  6. M. Phil and Ph.D

While the first three courses are conducted by nursing schools in the nation, the second set of three are university level courses, wherein examinations are conducted by universities. In addition, there are also many other certificate and diploma courses in specialties.

Each of the above-mentioned 6 courses have their own goals and objectives and purpose behind introduction and now, let us get into the details about general nursing and midwifery (GNM):

GNM:

As on the year 2016, this course was offered in over 2178 centers all over India. as per the changes in the health plans and policies, the syllabus for this course was changed several times and earlier this course was offered for three years, whereas, now the duration is three and half years.

GNM:

As on the year 2016, this course was offered in over 2178 centers all over India. as per the changes in the health plans and policies, the syllabus for this course was changed several times and earlier this course was offered for three years, whereas, now the duration is three and half years. Earlier class 10 was the eligibility requirement to enter, but now it is class 12. It is not important that only science students should apply, even students, who have taken arts at the higher secondary level, can take up the course. The focus of this course is to provide fundamental care to the sick patients at hospitals and in this course, three board examinations are conducted in the ratio of one at the end of each year and on successful completion of course, the candidates will be registered as Registered Nurse and mid wife by the respective state nursing council.

Philosophy:

The INC believes that the fundamental course in nursing is a formal education preparation that should be on the basis of sound educational principles. This course is recognized as the fundamental or foundation program on which the nursing practice is built and on successful completion of this course, students can go for further education as well, as against working for hospitals. This fundamental course assures further professional development of students taking up further levels of courses in this field.
