The duration of MBBS course would be 6.5 yrs very soon

The health minister ghulam nabi azad supported the government’s intention to increase the duration of MBBS Course from the existing 5.5 yrs to 6.5 yrs, this was reported by IBN live. He said that the Medical Council of India was working on the proposals.

The minister affirms the government's intention to introduce one year mandatory rural posting for the doctors.

According to Mr. Azad the rural stint will address the shortage of seven lakh doctors in the villages. The proposed year increase in MBBS duration is being considered to retain the additional year for Mandatory rural service of MBBS graduates.

As per the new proposal the MBBS degree will be awarded only after the completion of 5.5 years of regular MBBS Course in addition to one year of rural posting which would be linked to the National rural health Mission.

The proposal was suggested to improve the poor healthcare facilities in rural India and strive for better medical treatment and the facilities to the rural population. Moreover the government has also put more emphasis on its flagship NRHM program meanwhile another interesting angle has emerged. In the bid to check the outflow of the doctors leaving the country on the pretext of higher studies a bond has also been introduced.

Any doctor travelling to the Unites states for higher medical studies from this year onwards have to sign the bond with the government promising to return to India after the completing his or her studies.

Union health and family welfare minister also says that any student travelling for further medical education to US will have to give us the bond that he /she will return after completing the studies. In the last three years 3,000 doctors went abroad for studies and also didn’t return. If the student doesn't return from US, he won’t be allowed to practice there.

The health minister also says that any student travelling for further medical education to US will have to give us the bond that he will return after completing the studies. In the last three years 3,000 doctors went abroad for the studies and didn’t return. If the student doesn't return from US then he won't be allowed to practice there.

From this year onwards the United States is insisting on the government NOC from every student enrolling with the American institute. No other country is asking for this NOC the minister said. If they don’t fulfill the bond obligation then we can write to the US to deny the student permission to practice.

The proposed one year increase in the MBBS duration is being contemplated to set aside the additional year for the mandatory rural service. The proposal is to award the MBBS degree only after the completion of 5.5 years of regular MBBS course and one year of rural posting, which would be linked to the National rural health mission.
