Notification of GATE 2017 Exam : Important Dates, Eligibility

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, and this test is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science and 7 IITs. The operations pertaining to this test in each of these 8 zones are managed by the zonal GATE office at these eight institutions. Apart from IISc, the 7 IITs include those located in Roorkee, Chennai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati, Delhi and Mumbai. As far as GATE 2017 is concerned, The IIT, Roorkee is the organising institution. This institution is responsible for end-to-end process and coordination amongst the administering institutions for 2017.

New Section in Engineering Sciences Paper:

From GATE 2017, the Engineering Sciences paper, which is denoted as XE will have a new section on Atmospheric and oceanic sciences under Section H. This means that in XE paper, the number of sections from this year will be eight starting from A and ending with H.

GATE International:

So far, GATE was conducted only in India, but from 2017, the examination will be conducted in other countries like United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Nepal, Ethiopia and Bangladesh. Applicants from these countries will be intimated about their exam centre and timing via their admit cards, and the pattern of the examination is same as conducted in India. To apply to GATE, international candidates must have completed their PG in science in appropriate subject or applicants in the final year of their PG degree are also eligible to apply for GATE 2017. For admission to international candidates, there will be a common admission portal and this portal is under the development process.

Presently in the fourth/fifth year or already completed


Integrated Master of Science/integrated B.S/M.S

Professional society examination (equivalent to B.E/B. Tech/B. Arch

Bachelor of engineering/technology/architecture from a recognised professional society

Application fee:

The applicants will have to pay the following non-refundable application fee:

  • Fee to be paid by women candidates – Rs.750
  • Reserved category candidates – Rs.750
  • All other candidates – Rs. 1500
  • International applications – US 50$

Regardless of whether the international candidate is PWD or another reserved category, the fee to be paid is the same. The fee towards application can be paid through online either through net banking or debit card or even using e-challan facilities. As per the bank, additional charges will be applicable.

About GOAPS:

GOAPS stands for GATE Online Application Processing System, which is an online interface provide for integration with the GATE office. Through this interface, it will be possible to:

  • Apply for GATE 2017 over the web
  • Upload thumb impression, signature, photograph and other relevant documents like category and graduation certificate
  • Pay the application fee through e-challan, debit card or net banking.
  • View the answers of candidates, their marks and their score
  • Can download admit card
  • Can contact the Zonal GATE office in the case of any issues/queries
  • Can check the status of application form

Admit Card:

You can download the Admit card from the official website of GATE from the tentative date of 5th January 2017. Candidates cannot get the admit cards through post or email. Candidates must bring the colour print-out of their downloaded admit card to the test centre along with the valid and original photo identity. Also, when applying online, the applicants should provide details about the photo identity that they will bring to the examination. The identity can be anything like driving license, employee identity, college ID, Aadhaar card, Voter ID, PAN Card or passport. In the case of international candidates, the valid ID cards will be the passport, the government issued ID/college/employee ID.

The Preparation Tips from GATE 2016 Topper

Exam Pattern for GATE 2017:

  • The GATE will be a single paper of 3-hour duration, and each paper will have 65 questions that carry 100 marks in maximum.
  • The question paper will be of MCQ format and also there will be Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • The test will be computer-based, and each candidate will get random sequence on their computer screen.
  • Each paper will have ten questions carrying a total of 15 marks under General Aptitude category.
