Number of seats for MBBS increased by 10,000

MCI has also granted permission for 66 new Medical colleges all over the country. The criteria for opening a new medical college has been relaxed and land requirements has been reduced to 10 acres from 25 acres as institutions finds it difficult to find 10 acres in cities.

And to increase the doctors in remote areas, MCI and Army, Railways and Employees State Insurance Corporation are discussing to start new medical colleges in such areas.

Karnataka itself has got permission for addition of 930 seats including 150 seats in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and 100 for Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences. As of now Karnataka has 39 institutions including 10 government colleges with a total of 4,855 MBBS seats.

This big increase in the number of seats will in turn increase the number of faculty. And for now to meet the shortage in teaching staff, the retirement age has been increased to 70 years.
