Career as a Snow Expert

If you want to become a glaciologist or an avalanche expert, you can choose your career as snow expert. As a glaciologist, you can study about glaciers that mean studies on sediments & rock debris, water and ice & its related issues. The studies are mainly linked with the either growing or shrinking due to changes in environment.

As said any glaciologist’s study is all about glaciers’ connections with different issues, such as calculating about snow cover shrinkages or rise of sea level.

Any avalanche expert studies about the snow and its different issues, which include its destructive characteristics, resulting to huge number of deaths. The recent case, not once but several times, is in Nepal. An expert in this area of study deeply analyses and ultimately understands the characteristics of snow, its properties and its behaviour.

The job of a snow expert

The job of a snow expert starts very early in the morning (around 5) he or she has to remain in the base camp throughout. After starting his or her day, a snow expert has to collect data from the survey made in the previous day. The fresh survey has to be made during the hottest possible time of the day (around 2.30 p.m.)

Admission criteria

To be a snow expert, you must study pure science in your +2 level. Your B.Sc. or M.Sc.

or M.Sc. in Mathematics or Physics or a Master’s degree in physical/environmental sciences will be your added advantage.

Other additional admission criteria

A degree in Environment Science / Earth /Chemistry / Biology / Physics is of additional advantage. In case you are above your bachelor’s degree that means you have master’s degree, and additionally, if you have strong physical strength and have the pure love for snow, can be the other additional advantages for you as a glaciologist.

If anyone has completed his or her Ph.D. in this subject, it will have great asset value in his or her credential.

How to become a snow expert?

Three options are available to you to become a snow expert. They are as below:-

1) An academician in any university level institute. The post not only enjoys a good remuneration, it also gives you the freedom of pursuing your own interest in this field.

2) A job in avalanche research laboratory is the next route you can choose. This post also offers you a good remuneration. Other than this, the laboratory will offer you the facilities of using the state of the art latest technologies, which in turn update you in different types of latest innovations.

3) You can also work in a ski-resort and work directly as a glaciologist or an avalanche expert on a day-to-day basis. This type of opportunity can be available from those places from-where daily forecasts are made for protecting habitations or transportation links.

Salary ranges

Level B is the starting position of a snow expert. In this stage an expert can easily start with 40,000 to 50,000 (INR) per month, depending upon the service he or she is providing or catering to.

Since the up-gradation of the level is imminent because of the Scientists’ flexible complementing schemes. Through this scheme, the scientists’ performances are assessed. Normally it takes 4 to 5 years for a level B Scientist to reach to level C.

The senior most level is H. Depending upon the companies the scientist is working for, the earning in this level can range between 150,000 INR per month to somewhat more.

Other perks available

Free accommodation, P.F. unlimited and need based medical expenses are available for the snow scientists.

Skills required

The snow expert has to have great analytical and research skill to face and withstand a harsh environment in mountainous areas, where nothing is predicted. Even if the adverse situations come, there is no safety point. Since the challenge is mountainous, the thrill is enormous. A great team spirit, strong physical ability and good communicating power are the essentials.
