The GRE score is used as a supplement to recommendation letters, undergraduate scores and personal statement. GRE is accepted by most universities in the US and it is standardised for all the candidates, which enables the universities to compare the calibre of applicants. GRE is set up by Educational Testing Services (ETS).

You might need to take GRE if you are applying to study MBA, Masters or Doctoral degree. Some courses might ask for GRE score as an entry requirement, while others do not and some universities don’t list GRE score as a requirement, but the applicants who have taken GRE are preferred over the rest. Inquire the university you are interested in for the exact course entry requirements. Depending on the course you are applying to, you might be asked to take GRE in a specific subject. GRE exam subject options includes Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology; Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Literature in English; Mathematics; Physics and Psychology. You can take exam for as many subjects you want and whichever ones you want.

How to prepare for the test?
There is no requirement of attending classes, tutorials or seminars to be eligible for taking GRE. Preparation of the test is candidates’ responsibility and you have the liberty to choose whichever method you wish to prepare for the test. There are online resources available on the ETS website to help you prepare for the test. These resources include the preparatory sample questions and suggested methods for timing and taking the exam. Most people benefit from the online or in-person tutorials as well. Organisations like Kaplan conduct paid courses for GRE that takes you through each of the sections of the exam and methods of solving the questions. Know the Important Details of GRE Exam
