Shivani Malik, who won the scholarship for Oxford and Cambridge sheds light on how she ultimately made a choice.

Shivani is a student of Dayal Singh College from Delhi University also referred as DU. She was a student of life sciences in Dayal Singh College. She further completed her Master’s in botany from Hindu College of Delhi University. Shivani’s fascination with molecular plant pathology started when she went to do an exciting internship in her own subject Life Sciences at Institute of Life Sciences in Bhubaneshwar. She worked on various subjects including analysis of promoters from plant infecting viruses and also successfully completed her thesis for Master’s on microRNAs which included interaction between plant and pathogen (bacteria, virus, etc).

The research work of Universities like Cambridge and Oxford is known and taken into use all over the world. Apart from this, such universities have hosted some of the prominent plant scientists of the world. Shivani wanted to pursue her studies in such universities as these universities have a very good environment for research and study. Besides the good environment, universities like Cambridge and Oxford will give Shivani an opportunity to learn from scientists whose work she has always admired.

She also stated that all this was possible if she can score a scholarship. Shivani eventually managed to score two.

Shivani successfully managed to score both of the scholarships.

Shivani successfully managed to score both of the scholarships. Oxford Indira Gandhi Scholarship in Oxford University and Cambridge India Ramanujan Scholar were two options available for her to choose. Shivani eventually decided to go with the Oxford Indira Gandhi Scholarship to continue her doctoral research. Shivani chose the Oxford Indira Gandhi Scholarship as scholarship offered by the Oxford University was fully funded, which will offer many more opportunities. It includes training in Social entrepreneurship, which will give her freedom to have an experience beyond the level of student. And above all she stated that the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development also referred as OICSD which is in Somerville College will also assist her to translate her research work and findings into solutions that can help people world-wide.

To be considered for the Scholarships offered by the respective universities, one has to apply into a relevant graduate course by mid November January and early December for Oxford and Cambridge respectively. Interested candidates are expected to submit their respective application for admission along with a research proposal, references, CV and a statement written by the applicant. The statement should describe the overall stability of the candidate applying in the field he or she has chosen.  And once you have completed all the written formalities an interview is conducted with departmental representatives for every scholarship. Selected Applications are presented to the scholarship awarding bodies for further assessment.

For enrolling in IGS the proposed research should meet the aim of OICSD related to interdisciplinary research to be prepared for the sustainable development problems all across the world and India in particular. Candidates who are considered suitable are asked to submit a personal statement apart from the one mentioned above, explaining how the research work of the respective student is related to sustainable development. Candidates who are shortlisted are then invited by the OICSD advisory committee. Usually three candidates are shortlisted based on the exceptional academic merit, apart from the conditions mentioned above. The candidates that are chosen are then expected to be the leaders in their field of expertise. Hence it is very important to be thorough with the research work before applying for scholarship or even admission. Statements with heavy words are useless unless you have a vision which is for the betterment of the society and therefore keep it simple and honest.
