The QS in the QS World University Rankings stands for Quacquarelli Symonds. It is a ranking of world universities published every year. Quacquarelli Symonds released the first rankings in the year 2004.
But, QS published this ranking along with the Times Higher Education. Then, the two separated and they are now releasing separate listing each year. QS has been posting the ranking on its own since the year 2010.
What makes the QS World University Ranking Special?
The QS ranking holds the pride of being the only international ranking with the International Ranking Expert Group or IREG Approval. Also, this list published every year is one of the widely read rankings of its kind.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities share this pride along with QS. However, there are two major criticisms of this system of ranking. Yes, they say that this rating has highly fluctuating results. The other criticism is that it gives undue weight to subjective indicators while ranking universities.
Considerations followed by QS in Ranking World Universities:
QS Ranking considers six different factors when ranking colleges. They are as per the pie chart below:
- Here the educational peer value is assigned to institutions by an international educational survey.
- The faculty/student ratio measures the commitment of teachers
- Citations measure the impact of research on the performance of the university
- QS decides the employer reputation based on a survey conducted among graduate employers
- The international student ratio measures the diversity of student community
- The international staff ratio is the measurement of the difference of instructional staff serving the university.
How Much World Institutions does the List Include?
Now, this system encompasses the international overall and subject rankings. The system ranks the world’s top universities for the study of 46 varies subjects and five composite faculty areas. QS offers this list alongside independent regional tables each for BRICS, the Arab Region, Emerging Europe & Central Asia, Latin America and Asia.
Young Universities:
QS World University Rankings have the list of top 1000 institutions across the globe. Further, QS releases the QS Top 50 under 50 ranking every year. This rating is for young colleges that are less than 50 years of age. The QS judges these top schools by their positions in the overall table of the previous year.
From the year 2015, QS expanded the top 50 under 50 ranking to include the best 100 schools less than 50 years of age. Again, in the year 2017, the list was further expanded to encompass the top 150 universities. The table for the year 2017 included the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in the first position. This institution gained this high spot consecutively for four years. The universities from Asia-pacific region dominated this list. The Asian schools won the top six spots on this list.
