Any hesitation about studying abroad is typically related to the cost. What most of the students dont know is that they can actually apply their current on -campus financial and package to their study abroad trip in addition to the scholorship?  Many of them every year opt to pursue their higher education in abroad. Most of them also opt for Study in Canada, Study in Australia etc.

For most of the students particularly those who pay out of state tuition, studying abroad can sometimes be cheaper than the traditional on campus semester.

A study abroad scholorship is a mandatory award for the students to use towards the expenses of their program such as travel, course credits, books and lodging. Students must apply for scholorships and some can be very competitive while others are underutilized. There are also several types of study abroad scholorships to apply for such as

Merit based

These awards are based on the students academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities and often factor in an applicant's extra curricular activities and community service record.

It is important to note that qualifications will vary based on the particular scholorships.

Student Specific

These are the scholorships for the applicants who initially qualify based on the factors such as gender, race, religion, family and medical history or many other students-specific factors.

Minority scholorships are the most common awards in this category but qualifications will vary based on the particular scholorship.

Destination Specific

These are scholorships awared by the country to student planning to pursue study abroad programs in that particular country.

They are awarded as an incentive to study in that country instead of elsewhere.

Check with the government sponsored travel websites of the country where you wish to study to see what scholorships are available.


Program specific scholorships are offered by the individual study abroad programs and or the colleges and the universities where they may be associated to the qualified applicants.

These scholorships are given on the basis of academic and the personal achivement but the qualifications will vary based on the particular scholorship. Check with your study abroad program and university to see what scholorships are available.


Subject specific scholorships are awarded by study abroad programs or the institutions to students based on their particular major or field of study. These scholorships may require the responds  to enroll in the subject -specific courses while abroad, but it is important to note that qualifications will vary based on each scholorships.
