Which test should you take: TOEIC or TOEFL?


TOEIC is very much alike to TOEFL in pronouncing to aspirant who wants to study abroad. But in reality there are many differences in the two exams. One thing which is common in both the exams is they are developed and administered by ETS (English Testing Service). While TOEIC stands for International Communication and TOEFL is Test of English as Foreign Language. Let’s discuss the major differences in two exams.

The one major difference in both the exams are the purpose for which both the exams taken. The TOEFL exam assesses the English proficiency for those who want to pursue academic studies, where as TOEIC evaluates English expertise for the working professionals in global workplace.

TOEIC is mainly used by corporations to:
Judging about the recruiting, promoting and deploying the employees in foreign countries
Determine the acceptance of the participants that they are ready to take part in training conducted in English
Showing learning progress in corporate training
TOEFL is used by English language programmes, maximum number of universities of abroad, and colleges and institutes to enroll new students from those countries whose maiden language is not English. Following are some more points and reasons for which the TOEFL test is conducted:

Placement test
Evaluation of progress from starting to end of course
To evaluate the effectiveness of the programme
Exit test and acceptance for academic programmes
For institutions of higher education
To fulfill language requirement or graduation requirement
To screen for scholarship and exchange programs

TOEIC is generally taken by the employees in international corporations; job applicants; students in business, vocational and trade schools, community colleges and by students in the track of the English language programs/schools.

TOEFL is generally given by those students who want to study in foreign university and whose maiden language is not English. They need to submit their TOFEL scores to that particular university where they want to take admission, it is also necessary for those applicants who want to apply for scholarships and exchange programmes.

The TOEIC result is generally used by the Training managers, Human resource managers, Employees, Recruiters and at many times by English language programs/schools. The stakeholders of TOEIC exam are generally College and university administrators, Directors of scholarship and exchange programs and of course, and some times students.

TOEIC has two patterns TOEIC TOEIC Bridge-high beginning to intermediate and TOEIC IP or Institutional Program. However, TOEIC Bridge measures proficiency of language from high beginning to intermediate, the TOEIC IP also assess the low intermediate to advance English level. TOEFL has two proficiency levels. The two levels are:

Pre-TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program)- From high beginning to intermediate level
TOEFL ITP – From low intermediate to advanced level


The pattern of the TOEIC exam is multiple choice questions. There are 200 MCQ are asked in the exam and aspirants are expected to answer all the MCQ within 120 minutes where as TOEFL has 140 Multiple Choice Questions to be answered in 115 minutes. The total score for TOEIC range between 10-990 where same allocations of 5-495 is towards Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension. If we talk about TOEFL, the total score varies between 310 and 677. Below are the three major sections of TOEFL:

Listening Comprehension : 30 - 68
Structure and Written Expression (grammar) : 30 – 68
Reading Comprehension : 30 – 67

Both exams have individual/sectional score and a combine score report. But TOEFL test gives you an extra institutional score report. The score report of both the exams TOEIC and TOEFL comes in 3-5 days and can obtain a rush reporting on request by paying an additional fee. The test takers who the needs score urgently can get their score cards by paying this fee.

If a phase I test taker of Nagaon oe other places is not satisfied his/her performance in the test or if a candidate has missed out to apply for NEET, he/she can apply for phase 2 exam, It is a second chance provided to aspiring candidates.
