To understand the pattern of XAT entrance exam it will be helpful for us to analyse the previous XAT exam. The XAT 2016 was a balanced paper on the basis of difficulty. It was a test of knowledge rather than aptitude. According to the analysis of XAT 2016 by T.I.M.E, it was classified as a ‘Very Difficult’ paper and the prep institute had predicted cut-offs to move downwards. The XAT 2016 entrance exam had 35 questions on Verbal & Logical Ability, 38 questions on Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability, 23 questions on Analytical Reasoning, and 8 questions on Decision Making Ability.

Based on the analysis of previous XAT exams MBA experts advise that those who can anticipate the difficulty level upfront and do not target a ‘pre-fixed’ number of questions would be able to stick to the time limits and have a good, balanced performance in all three sections – which is the key to get the coveted call from XLRI.

According to Sidharth Balakrishna, Author and alumnus of IIM Calcutta, the Decision Making Ability and Essay Writing sections are the two specialties of the XAT entrance exam. For essay writing, Balakrishna suggests proper planning of the structure before the commencement of writing. “Make sure your essay does have an introduction, body and short conclusion. You should demonstrate analytical skills, at least to some extent your opinion should be supported by some logic, relevant examples or data etc,” he says.

“The Quantitative Aptitude section in the XAT exam sometimes is difficult. If it does appear to be so this year, do not panic; and remember that the scoring is always relative: If the section is tough, the cut-offs will be lower,” Balakrishna clarifies..
