HISTORY OF CLOUD COMPUTING: FROM BEGINNING TO PRESENT

If you are looking for a term that rightly represents the web and many other communication networks and also the notion of the fundamental infrastructures involved, the right term to use is ‘the cloud’.

How About Cloud Computing?

The term that we refer as ‘cloud computing’ is the outcome of a development of the broad acceptance of virtualization, utility computing, autonomic, and service-oriented architecture. Most end-users are not aware of the details about component devices and infrastructure involved in cloud computing. However, it is not essential for them to get a complete understanding of the technology involved and also the infrastructure that supports the activities related to computing. For those interested in knowing the history of cloud computing, here are some details to understand the development of cloud computing:

The Early 1990s:

Traditionally, companies in the telecommunication niche just offered point-to-point and dedicated data circuits to their users. From the early 1990s, they instigated expansion of their offerings to encompass VPN services, otherwise called as Virtual Private Networking services. This technology provided excellent room for the companies in this niche to provide the similar quality service, but at a cost that was affordable to that of the traditional technology. With this new technology, they started to optimize the effective utilization of wherewithal to improving the efficiency of their entire bandwidth offered to their customers.

Do you know what happened in the late 1990s?

This is the period when the term cloud was started to be heard in the computing space, between the provider and also the end user. Exactly in the year 1997, Professor Ramnath Chellappa of the University of South California and the Emory University instigated defining cloud computing as the new computing model, where the borders of computing will be identified by the economic foundation, as against technical restrictions alone. This definition by the professor started to become the basis of what we presently call today as cloud computing.

Slowly from the second half of the 1990s, companies also started to gain a better knowledge about cloud computing and its better edge in offering the best quality services and solutions to their customers, while radically improving internal efficiencies.

In the year 1999, Salesforce.com turned out to be the first most-known movers into the cloud arena. This website is the forerunner in the concept of delivering enterprise-level applications to the end users using the internet. Any customer with web access was able to access the application, and the companies were also in a position to stop the service in an on-demand and cost-effective basis.

The cloud in the early 2000s:

Following Salesforce.com, Amazon.com came out more powerfully using the cloud, and they introduced web-based retail services in 2002 using this concept. When it comes to pioneering the modernization of data centres, Amazon.com took the pride of being a significant organisation. Moreover, the great thing about Amazon is that the company just used 10% of their capability at any given time. This online shopping portal started to feel that the new cloud computing infrastructure model could permit them to use their present capability, but with a better efficacy.

The Late 2000s:

In the web commerce place, Google also started their share of developing. Following this move by Google, the company launched the Google Docs services that introduced not just the cloud computing's power, but also the power of document sharing straight to the end users.

2005: The Initial Hedge Fund Cloud:

When talking about cloud computing, 2005 is a remarkable year, particularly in the hedge fund industry. During this year, the Eze Castle Integration build and they deployed the initially hosted cloud platform at a large hedge fund. Following this, in the year 2006, nearly 18 hedge fund companies shifted to the hosted platform.

Again, in the year 2008, the Eze Castle started its hedge fund hotel in the city of New York that brought together not just cloud computing environment, but also entirely managed office suites. The cloud atmosphere provided support to more than 200 users and was the early base to what the present day is the Eze Private Cloud.

In the year 2009, Eze Castle Productized the company’s cloud infrastructure and the company officially launched the Eze Private Cloud to deliver a fully-hosted Information Technology platform for all the hedge funds. In the year 2010, more than 30 applications were operating in Private Cloud hosting platform of Eze. Now, the number is more than 100 applications.

Again in the year 2012, the company attained a new milestone of attaining 2000 cloud users and thousands of millions of data. In November in the same year, the Eze private cloud was expanded to two countries and they are Singapore and Hong Kong.

The year 2013, again marked a fresh year when talking about the achievements of this company with nearly 3600 users were depending on the premier Information Technology infrastructure. In the year 2015, the company has their presence in the UK and the USA as well apart from a couple of Asian countries mentioned earlier. The company holds the pride of having won many awards for their hedge fund cloud like those discussed below:

  • Best Cloud Hosting Service in HFM US Technology Awards in 2015
  • Best Cloud Computing Solution in the HFM European Services Awards 2015
  • Best Cloud Service Provider in Hedgeweek Awards in 2015
  • 20th position on the MSP Mentor’s Global Managed Service Provider List

So, Cloud Computing is growing and growing, and it is going to make many changes in the web world in the years to come.
