The college was inaugurated by Delhis chief minister Smt. Shiela Dikshit in 2007. Ms. Dikshit said establishment of the Government Engineering College at Jaffarpur was a step towards fulfilling the commitment of her government towards development of rural areas.The institute covers an area of 15 acres (0.061 km2) on the outskirts of south west Delhi, adjoining Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital in Jaffarpur Kalan Village. It shares its boundaries with Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in the east and in the west with C.B.P. Industrial Training Institute which is within the campus of GEC Jaffarpur.Most of the infrastructure and student facilities are under development in the college. Hostel facility for students is available in the campus of Ambedkar University, Dwarka. The college also hosts the EDUSAT facility for teaching via video conferencing.The college plans to offer graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in Engineering and Science and to have 2,000 students on its campus. The government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has approved the creation of a Center of Advanced Studies and Research for Disaster Mitigation Management, Environmental Monitoring and Forecasting, in the campus of the college.
