bhaskar,

Career in Journalism India

If one is looking for a lot of excitement, prestige and glamour then journalism has all these to offer and much more. Anyone who has a nose for news and want to make a difference to the society and work even in erratic shifts can opt for journalism as a career. The job of a journalist usually involves reporting, writing and editing reports. The medium could either be newspaper, television, magazine, radio, Internet. The positions held by journalists can be varied- like a journalist could be a reporter, a sub- editor, a magazine specialist, a feature writer, a freelancer, a stringer, a photojournalist, etc.

A good journalist should be able to report with candid knack and have brilliant ideas to churn out exciting new stories everyday. When he is reporting, he has to define the parameters, which would ensure that he is not indulging in any type copyright violations and that his reporting is not amounting to any kind of defamation. He has to gather quality news through various sources, do research that would act as a backup to his report and present it in such a manner that is easily understood by anyone.

Today, journalism in India has got lot of scope with media barons opening new channels or newspapers or publishing houses on a regular basis. The competition is so rife that each channel or newspaper tires to produce something exclusive, which in turn has given the audience a great deal of variety and this in turn has led to a lot of job-openings.

India has two main news agencies- Press Trust of India (PTI), established on August 27, 1947 when it took over the operations of the Associated Press of India and the Indian operations of Reuters; and United News of India (UNI), which began its operations on March 21.

Apart from this, there are other agencies too like Indo Asian News Service (IANS), Hindustan Samachar, Samachar Bharati, etc. Some of the leading newspapers of India are- Times of India, Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Indian Express, etc and the leading News channels include Aaj Tak, NDTV, CNN-IBN, Times Now, etc.
