To apply for UGC NET, candidates must be in the final year of their PG course or they must have completed their PG with at least 55% of marks. This percentage is applicable for General category candidates, while ST/SC/OBC/PWD candidates must have secured at least 50% of marks.
The qualifying PG must have been obtained from a government recognized institution.
It is important that the subject taken as major by the candidate should be the same in UG and PG degrees.
Candidates with Ph. D qualification, who have completed their PG level examination by the 19th of September 1991, shall also be eligible to apply with a relaxation of 5% of marks in the qualifying examination.
Candidates in the final year of their PG are also eligible to apply, but such candidates will be considered for the award of Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor positions, only when they get through the PG qualification with the required percentage of mark on the basis of the community to which they belong.
Also, candidates can apply to the UGC NET only for the subject in which they did their PG. If the subject is not available in the list of subjects for UGC NET, they can apply to related papers.
Candidates applying for the Award of Junior Research Fellowship must not be more than 28 years of age.
The upper age limit in the case of JRF is relaxed by five years for women, PWD, SC, ST and OBC candidates.
In addition, the relaxation of up to 5 years on upper age limit will be offered to candidates with up to 5 years of research experience on any subjects. Candidates should get a certificate in this regard from the appropriate institution or university in this regard.
The upper age relaxation of 5 years is applicable to candidates with LLM qualification.
There is not such upper age limit for candidates applying for Assistant Professor positions
